Why Blasting Abrasive Types Matter More Than the Machine
Two things happen when abrasive hits a surface. It removes what you don’t want — rust, paint, mill scale — and it leaves a texture behind. That texture is called the profile, and it’s the tooth the new coating bites into. Coating manufacturers spec that profile in thousandths of an inch, and the industry standards that govern it come from SSPC, the Society for Protective Coatings. Too shallow and the paint peels. Too deep and the peaks poke through the coating and rust anyway.
Different blasting abrasive types produce different profiles at different speeds on different metals. That’s the whole game. The blast pot doesn’t know the difference. We do. And to be clear about how we operate: the media costs us what it costs us. Same price to you either way — we pick by what the job needs, never by what’s cheapest in the shop that week.
Garnet: The Precision Pick
Garnet is a natural mineral, hard and dense, and it cuts clean. It throws less dust than slag, leaves a tight, consistent profile, and doesn’t embed in the surface the way softer byproduct medias can. When a job has a written spec — structural steel headed for an industrial coating, machine bases, anything where an inspector will run a profile gauge over the surface — garnet is usually what we load.
The honest downside: it costs more. Putting garnet on a rusty farm gate is like hiring a surveyor to hang a picture frame. It’ll work. You just paid for precision the job never asked for. We’ll tell you when the job doesn’t want it.
Coal Slag: The Workhorse
Coal slag — most folks know the brand name Black Beauty — is an angular byproduct media, and it is the pickup truck of abrasives. Aggressive, cheap, and it eats heavy rust and mill scale for breakfast. Most of the heavy steel work we do out the Newberry and Alachua corridor — implements, stock trailers, gates, cattle panels, shop-built ironwork — gets slag, and it gets done fast.
The trade-offs, out loud: slag is a one-and-done media. It shatters on impact, so there’s no recycling it, and dry slag makes real dust — on jobs where dust matters, we switch to dustless blasting in Gainesville and knock it down with water. And slag never touches aluminum or thin stainless in our operation. Angular particles embed in soft metal, and embedded iron-bearing grit will grow rust freckles through a new paint job. Wrong media, ruined part. It trades one problem for another.
Glass Bead: The Finish, Not the Fight
Glass bead is the odd one out because it’s round. Instead of cutting, it peens — hammers the surface clean and leaves a soft satin finish that looks factory-fresh. Aluminum wheels and castings, stainless rails, outboard parts, ornamental work where the metal itself is the finish: that’s bead territory.
Where bead loses: it’s slow against heavy rust and thick coatings, and it doesn’t establish the deep anchor profile a high-build industrial coating needs. Bead-blasting a rusted trailer frame is a long afternoon of disappointment. Use it for the finish, not the fight. For truly delicate stuff — engine internals, wood, antique brass — there’s also soda and walnut shell, which we’ve covered separately, but bead handles most of the “make my aluminum pretty again” calls we get.
5 Honest Rules for Choosing Blasting Abrasive Types
- Match the media to the metal, not the calendar. Hard angular grit on soft aluminum embeds and warps. Round bead on quarter-inch rusted plate wastes your day. The metal decides first; your schedule decides last.
- Let the coating pick the profile. Every primer and epoxy datasheet states the surface profile it wants. We read it before the compressor starts. If your painter can’t tell you the target profile, that tells you something about the paint job you’re about to get.
- Harder isn’t better. The most aggressive media isn’t the best media — it’s just the fastest at making mistakes. Thin sheet metal, body panels, and old trailer skins want lower pressure and gentler media, or you’ll blast in ripples no paint can hide.
- Ask where the spent media goes. A trailer frame blasted with slag leaves a couple hundred pounds of black grit in the grass. We tarp, contain, and haul — ask any outfit you’re pricing whether cleanup is in the number or waiting in your yard.
- Be suspicious of a one-media answer. If an outfit quotes your job without asking what the surface is and what’s going on top of it afterward, they own one media and every job gets it. That’s like a mechanic with one wrench.
A Word on Sand, Silica, and Safety
Notice actual sand isn’t on the menu. Blasting with silica sand puts respirable crystalline silica in the air, and that’s the dust that causes silicosis — which is why OSHA’s abrasive blasting guidance pushes the industry toward substitute medias and strict controls. “Sandblasting” is the old name that stuck; the professional trade moved on to safer abrasives years ago. Any crew still pouring play sand into a pot next to your house is telling you what they think of safety — yours and theirs.
The Florida Wrinkle: Humidity Doesn’t Care Which Media You Picked
Here’s the part that matters more in Gainesville than the media choice: what happens in the hours after blasting. Walnut shell is the gentlest of the bunch, ground nutshell that cleans without cutting; think antique hardware, log home timbers, and surfaces where even glass would be too much.
None of these are upsells. They’re wrenches in a drawer. A horse farm out past Jonesville might see three different medias on one visit — slag on the gate hinges, crushed glass on the board-fence hardware, walnut on the hundred-year-old barn door — because the surfaces are different, so the answer is different.
Straight Answers Before the Hose Comes Out
